For the past 60 years, hemp has been in the global news and declared an illegal substance for both use and unauthorised possession.
Following a first step taken in 2016 where the use of CBD (a molecule found in hemp) was legalised, on 2 December 2020 the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs of the UN voted to remove medical marijuana from the list of the world’s most dangerous drugs. In detail, it has re-classified the THC molecule (Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol) as effective for therapeutic activities, giving the plant a medicinal role, clearing the way for its usefulness.
According to the United Nations, the Commission for Narcotic Drugs, which is based in Vienna and comprises 53 member states, considered a number of recommendations by the WHO, including removing cannabis from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention, where it was listed alongside substances such as heroin and cocaine. This is a long-awaited decision that could pave the way for an expansion of research into marijuana and its therapeutic use.
This official change of course gives a whole new quality to the plant that can now be used in phytotherapy (treatment of humans by stimulating and rebalancing their its endocannabinoid system, a subject hitherto unknown to most but which represents an important opportunity in the treatment of many diseases lacking valid alternatives.
The legalization of hemp has opened up new horizons that were previously impossible, new jobs and new projects for people who are getting into it. To such an extent that there are many who have decided to radically change their lifestyle to bet on this new frontier that is now achievable:
David Sollbauer (27), after his studies and some years of experience in aeronautics realised he wanted to change his lifestyle and decided at the age of 22 to move to spain to enter the world of hemp inflorescence production.
In 2016, after the legalisation of the use of the CBD molecule, he decided to return to Italy and since 2017 he has been working as a farmer, dedicating himself to the care of hemp plants from the bud until the harvest, which takes place in the following months.
Simone Fagherazzi (35) was called to the vocation of Medicine at a young age, the desire to practise this profession moving him from about the age of six. At the end of his his studies, he met Silvia who was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma shortly afterwards. This experience led him to question himself deeply about the profession and especially about the resolutions of the potential treatment of the Human Endocannabinoid System. He left his specialist training in gynaecology and went to live 3½ years in Nepal where he refines knowledge of ritual use of the Cannabis plant. Since 2019 he has been practising as a doctor in the city of Turin treating many people according to methods innovative methods learned in the East applied to Western medicine. He is a great believer in the healing potential of hemp, so much so that he bought a camper van to visit patients during this Pandemic period.
My desire to learn more about the production and therapeutic use of hemp led me to meet these two people who have revolutionised their lives by dedicating themselves totally to this plant whose future looks increasingly ‘green’.
